Demons Coaches Graduate with Honours

Monday, August 15, 2016 - 3:48 PM by Chris BROWN

The inaugural 2016 Demons Coaching Academy concluded this past Saturday at Lathlain Park. The 8 graduating coaches were presented with certificates to a 200 strong crowd at the Round 21 Presidents lunch before Perth took on East Fremantle in the WAFL.

The Coaching Academy, which launched in conjunction with the Perth Football Club, aimed to further educate and develop community coaches who strived to reach level 2 status.

Coordinated and delivered by District Operations Manager - Scott Faulkner, Development Officer - Chris Brown, Director of Coaching - Trevor Williams and Talent Manager Peter Brear and spread out over the 2016 season. Participating coaches spent 1 session a month in the inner sanctum of Lathlain Park for a variety of workshop sessions.

The sessions ranged from onfield interactive training with Earl Spalding (League Coach), Andrew Panetta (Development Coach) and Andrew Ruck (Colts Coach), Strength and Conditioning sessions with Brock Fleay (Colts S&C) and post game vision review with the Development Squad just to name a few highlights. The program also tasked coaches to complete a season long assignment focused around developing a specific skill for an individual player or team. The coaches then delivered their findings back to the group with some impressive results.

4 of the graduating coaches have been identified by the Coaching Advisory Group and offered Development Squad assistant roles at the Perth Football Club for 2016. The remaining 4 coaches will take their newly gained knowledge back to there community club and continue to work at becoming level 2 coaches in due course.

Development Officer Chris Brown couldn't speak more highly of the program “I am really proud of what we achieved with this pilot academy. We had a fantastic group of coaches, all who bought in from day 1 and have further developed their own coaching abilities across the season. Having 4 coaches offered Development Squad roles on the back of this academy, is a fantastic result. Not only for them personally but for the Perth Football Club and the District as well.”
