Nimmo strikes gold at Ambassador Awards

Seven football awards were presented for outstanding promotion of Australian Football in the school community at the 2016 AFL School Ambassador Awards night on Thursday, August 4.

The awards night was hosted by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) at Domain Stadium in front of a supportive crowd of West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Football Club, school and community football representatives.

The Demons District nominated 5 finalists for the 2016 awards -

Most Outstanding First Year AFL School Ambassador 

Brendan Chapman, Aquinas College 

Most Outstanding Primary AFL School Ambassador

Nuria Ushoroff, Australian Islamic College Kewdale

Most Outstanding Indigenous AFL Program

Simon Nimmo, Yule Brook College

Rob Thomson, Clontarf Aboriginal College

Most Outstanding Multicultural Program 

Vicki Bramwell-Keys, Cannington Community College

It was a successful evening for the district, with Simon Nimmo from Yule Brook College Clontarf bringing home the award for Most Outstanding Indigenous Program. Nimmo, who played 104 League games for Claremont between 1999-2007, developed some key programs for the school, including:                                             

- Diversity Umpiring and Coaching course

- Inaugural 7/8/9 Youth Girls team        

- JB Cup employment and footy expo          

- Nicky Winmar Academy 

Development Officer Chris Brown states " Simon is one of our top Ambassadors in the district. His ability to connect with key community stakeholders and deliver outcomes for his students on and off the field, is second to none. This award couldn’t have gone to a more deserving winner." 

The AFL Schools Ambassador Program encourages schools and communities to work together to develop and promote Australian Football in the classroom and on the sporting field. All registered teachers are eligible to become a AFL School Ambassador. The WAFC provides training, equipment and support, free of charge.
